We had the nicest lunch here with the kids today.. the kids actually sat still for 5 minutes and ate their food it was yummy. Really reasonable prices and lovely staff and atmosphere. We will definitely go again! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Meal type: Lunch Price per person: £20–30 Kid-friendliness: Simple but lovely children’s menu and food was delicious. Just what’s needed for kids

I had an awful birthday meal here. Firstly, creating a six-seater table by joining a four and two together across a narrow aisle made for incredibly claustrophobic dining. It also made navigating the restaurant difficult for us as well as the servers. In my party was a friend who had travelled up from Brighton to celebrate my birthday over the weekend; she leads a dairy-free diet for health reasons. After her Dirty Chai Latte with oat milk arrived, she asked if it was vegan. The answer of “I assume so” was unconvincing, and so she insisted for the server to double-check with the person who prepared it. They came back and assured her the drink was made with oat milk. No sugar was served with the hot drinks, so we had to call across the restaurant to be given some: it’s hard to understand why the server didn’t bring a bowl or sachets with them. Our food order arrived, and the dishes were not up to standard. A knife with a wet handle precariously lodged into my Grilled Cheese Steak Sandwich disconcerted me, but it was the wafer-thin smearing of tomato chutney, fatty bits of meat and miserly sprinkle of cheese on top of the barely grilled bread that made this a pitiful plate, as did the portion of undercooked fries. The Salt & Pepper Fries, rather than being evenly coated in the toppings, were just chips with some onion and pepper thrown on the top layer. The Hot Honey Pizza was incredibly greasy, and the vegan Margherita Pizza simply unpalatable. Another friend’s Chicken Gyro contained several pieces of gristle- and bone. We all consider this poor-quality food to be unjustifiably overpriced. Finding bone in food is unacceptable, but informing the server at the end only got us a dismissive ‘Sorry’. We headed straight for the tram after leaving. Before boarding, my friend had to leave us promptly to deal with a sudden flare-up. Given that she didn’t eat anything since the meal, it was apparent something served to her at Alfred’s contained dairy. She decided to cut her visit short, which made for a premature and disappointing farewell since we don’t see her often on account of the distance between us. This level of negligence demonstrated by staff is as unsatisfactory as it is worrying- not to mention completely unnecessary. To prevent this from happening in the future, diners should be asked if there are any allergies before orders are taken. With all the above in mind, I regret making this booking and wish that I had taken us elsewhere: the food and service was a markedly low point of my birthday weekend. For health and safety reasons above all, though, avoid Alfred’s. NB: I emailed my concerns over, but they have ignored me.
