The rain come down over the German street in a gray and patient curtain and I went seeking shelter and found it in Asia-Wok. The windows were lit against the weather and inside it was clean and bright and warm. I ordered the knuspriges hähnchen chop suey mit verschiedenen gemüsen. The chicken came forth crisp as dry leaves under bootheel and the vegetables cut bright against the plate. Steam rose from it like a signal fire. It was good and honest fare and there was no deceit in it. We shared few common words, the staff and I, but language proved no real barrier. We pointed and nodded and laughed and the transaction was made in good faith. They seemed pleased to have me there out of the rain and before I departed they brought a fried banana unbidden and would take no coin for it. Such gestures weigh more than gold in a foreign land. The service was swift. The place was orderly. The people were kind. Outside the rain went on falling but I stepped back into it fed and fortified. I will return.
