We chose to stay six nights in Rhens as a home base for our daily travels all over the Rhine and Moselle valleys. We needed a good bakery and coffee to send us off each morning. Enter: Vollkorn-Backerei Barth. So began our education about German style baked goods and their fortifying and inspiring qualities. We met the baker/manager, Marina, who fed us each morning, pulled a pair of double espressos for each of us, and as the days went on, became a friend for our tourist adventure. The bread rolls, though not French flakery, were surprisingly crisp outside, tender and moist inside, and full of rich savour. The pride which Germans have about their bread is fully realized in this bakery. The coffee was strong without all-to-frequent sourness of other cafes, and as good as the best one can find in this part of the world. Most days, Marina cleverly adorned one of our two espressos with a chocolate heart, ostensibly so one of us could gift it to the other each morning. As we sat and enjoyed our breakfasts, locals and itinerant workers popped into the bakery, one after the other. Each was quickly served and sent on his way. Women of Rhens came to snag a half and full dozens of the bread rolls. The oven replaced them while we breakfasted. The third day of our stay was the start of unseasonably cold weather with rain. Marina went into the back room and reappeared with an umbrella to loan. Just as with the hearty breakfasts, we needed the umbrella for the next three days. Between the food, coffee, and the umbrella, we were fully provided for by Vollkorn Backerei and warm-hearted Marina. Both will come up in conversation at our home for years into the future. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: €1–10 Recommendation for vegetarians: Somewhat recommend Vegetarian options: Marina will make a sandwich for you if you don't see what you want. If you want a caprese, she will give you a caprese.
