I had breakfast at Malta Inn Beefeater. I don’t say this lightly, but it was the worst breakfast I’ve ever had served up. That includes airport buffets and petrol station sandwiches. The eggs were the headline act. I ordered fried. What arrived could have doubled as paperweights. The whites were tight and rubbery. The yolks were fully set, emotionally and physically. I tapped one with my fork and half expected a ringing sound. I’ve had boiled sweets with more give. The mushrooms looked like they’d been gently dried in a loft for several winters. No juice. No softness. Just thin, shrivelled slices clinging to the idea of being food. I chewed one for so long I started reflecting on my life choices. I politely asked the staff if I could have new eggs. Edible ones. They said they’d sort it. None came. At that point I considered whether the original eggs had been reclassified as building materials and there was simply no alternative stock. The sausages were average. The bacon was fine. The hash browns tried their best to carry morale. The beans were the only part of the plate that behaved like breakfast. The coffee was hot, which felt like a small victory. Staff were polite when spoken to, but the kitchen and reality were not on speaking terms. I came in hungry. I left defeated. If this was a full English, it was full of regret. One star for heat, one star for effort, and zero stars for anything that once resembled an egg.
