What a fantastic find, and purely by chance! From the moment I walked in, the warm welcome and great service set the tone. It is proper food all the way here—only proper sandwiches served for instance, which is just how it should be. The beer selection is brilliant, with plenty of choice including great zero-alcohol options. And can we talk about the loos? Spotlessly clean, which makes such a refreshing difference. Next time I am in the area, I won’t be popping in by chance—it will be a planned stop. Highly recommend. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: £20–30

Well sad to be disappointed especially as it was fathers day and I got to pick where my wife was going to pay. Smarden is approx an hour away and we had eaten in a lovely village pub 2 years prior and the food there was amazing apparently there was a link to a well known celebrity baker so may be no surprised that the standards were very high. Anyway the bell, yes a historic building perhaps could do with a little freshening up and a few more personality touches wouldn't go amiss. The staff were polite and friendly; two younger staff in particular were very professional. The main let down which was the most important part of the experience was yes you guest it sadly the food. We were a group of 4 there to toast my fatherhood abilities once again. With high expectations based on the reviews and the location. I was initially surprised to be seated in the main restaurant as the booking offered the garden only as there was no other availability at the time when booking yesterday. Anyway it was a Sunday roast menu only, which was fine as we were all looking forward to a traditional roast. However my youngest wanted something different, they were very accommodating and chicken goujons were the order of the day. They were cooked beautifully and my daughter let me know she had chosen wisely (Don't you just hate that when you get out played by a child). For the rest of us it wasn't looking too good when the table ahead of us received their food the yorkie's looked like they had spent too long in the sun. Which the children weren't shy about mentioning to their parents. My mum isn't shy either and blurted out that she won't be happy either if hers arrived the same way, like scolding a little one who forgets her manners I quickly turned and found myself telling my mother to shhhhhhh! Sorry to all the nannies out there that are frowning at my behaviour after reading this. Anyway, when our food arrived the Yorkshiire Puds were no better in fact mine and mothers were so over cooked mine desintegrated when i broke a piece off. I immediately called out to the waitress who apologized and replaced both puds. The rest of the food was generally poor; the roast potatoes you felt weren't fresh none looked over cooked some were very hard as though they were warmed up from the day before.My Wife said they were stale with dentures I couldn't eat them. The same with the lamb it was not tender for the most part, it needed more time in the oven as did the beef which my wife ordered. Unlike the veg that had spent too long cooking. The best bits were the stuffing and the gravy. Come on the bell inn you can do better and make sure you charge the correct amount nearly a £40 overcharge is embarassing for the customer to have to bring to your attention. A 2 course meal at £36 per head does not mean charge twice for the desserts. Food: 2 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3
