It's a classic grande cafe, the type of place I haven't been to since the 80s. No music, just the sound of conversation and clinking glasses and serviceware. Elegant decor. I could have been in Paris. My companion started with vegetables rapees and liked them very much. Large quenelles of finely grated beet, celeriac and carrot, each with a different vinaigrettes. I started with the artichoke superfood salad which was pleasant with a tasty vinaigrette. It contained toasted walnuts and quinoa. The artichokes were tinned but the crispy Kale chips on top were lovely. There was quite a long wait for mains. My companion ordered the boeuf bourguignon served with mash. Beef was very tender, though taste was a little dull for me. But then again, I just don't like the uniform flavour of stews. I had steak frites ordered rare. Expertly cooked flat iron, being very tender for a cut that can be tricky to prepare. Served rare as ordered and of a modest size. The chips were a bit disappointing. Slightly undercooked so not really soft on the inside. Bearnaise was not acidic enough for my taste, but nothing a wedge of lemon from the bar couldn't fix. Food was decent if not spectacular. A nice hangout nonetheless. It is a spot I would choose to meet up with others, especially if there might be a wait for someone who is habitually late. I would also choose Bellanger for taking an elderly relative who likes elegant surroundings and no surprises on the food menu. This place was quite disappointing. Slow service and hard to get their attention, they forgot one of our sides, and they were stingy with the tap water. The food was also not great. I got steak frites. Fries were mediocre, bernaise was good, but the steak was not good. Served at room temperature, tough and sinewy. Hard to cut and to chew. Food: 2 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4 Meal type: Lunch Price per person: £20–30
