We have been coming to Benvenuti for years now. Having grown up in Hazel Grove, with my family growing up and now my own family. We no longer live in Hazel Grove but has always been one of our favourites and enjoy coming back. Warm and welcoming, really personable and attentive staff and traditional, Italian menu choices. However, on our last 2 visits it’s just not been the same. Each time we have been met with a hostile member of staff at the door who is not very welcoming at all and makes you feel a burden for wanting to eat and spend money (and it’s not cheap) in the restaurant. There has been few customers and no atmosphere, service has been rushed as if they can’t wait to get rid of you. We visited last night at 7.50, it looked quiet but granted, it’s January and a lot of places are quiet unless running a new year offer which many are. I actually left the family in the car and ran in to check if ok for a table for which I was told yes. No mention of the kitchen apparently closing at 8.15. When seated we were rushed into ordering and told when not quite decided after 2 minutes of getting drinks that “obviously’ the kitchen closes at 8.15 ! Not that obvious when not told this and seems very unusual on a Saturday night. The meal was all very awkward with staff members just hanging around, felt like we were being watched one with a coat on, quite clearly waiting for us to leave. I appreciate that it’s tough staying open especially in the quieter months but I think when people are wanting to come to the restaurant and spend good money if your kitchen is open until 8.15 it’s wrong to make customers feel unwelcome when they arrive in plenty of time of this. If your kitchen is open until 8.15 you shouldn’t be planning on shutting then which was obviously what the staff were thinking. We were in there for under an hour and spent £100 for 3 of us so don’t think they should be turning their noses up at that on a quiet, cold night in January ! I’m really sorry to say we won’t be rushing back to Benvenutis any time soon which is a shame given the family history of the restaurant, their reputation and as the tortellini ragu is my son’s favourite meal ! The poster displayed in the restaurant seems to no longer be true, unfortunately. Food: 4 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 1 Price per person: £30–40
