Possibly the worst breakfast we’ve ever had, I had veggie and my husband had the meat one, everything is deep fat fried, the veggie sausages were definitely the worst I’ve ever had, just a bland pink mush more like a mousse in a deep fat fried shell, the meat sausage was shocking tasted like dirty unchanged oil, bacon was wafer thin, very salty and really over cooked, very poor quality. Yet they charge nearly £14 each per breakfast! Meal type: Breakfast Price per person: £10–20

Dear Lisa Sorry to read this. We would like to respond to some of your comments as we received no negative feedback on the day of your visit. Our Owen Taylor butcher’s meat sausages are not deep fried, they are cooked in an oven & our back bacon comes from the same supplier and is also of a good quality. I’m sorry that you didn’t like the Linda McCartney soya veggie sausages. We would always prefer that you raise any complaints with the team on the day as we can rectify them at the time. Unfortunately I just cannot recommend The Book Cafe at Belper. The veggie breakfast was poor - mass produced soft hash browns soaked in oil (like they had been fried in oil that was too cold), dry, overcooked halloumi and veggie sausage. Definitely not worth £13.95. Scampi wrap was OK, though lukewarm and mostly chips... Additional chips were also lukewarm. Biscoff latte was a sweet treat, syrupy and creamy as expected, however the tea was a cheap teabag. For the money you'd expect a decent brew! To top it off, the music was both loud and frankly inappropriate for the lovely setting. David Guetta's Titanium at almost max volume while trying to have a chilled lunch in the old orangery anyone? The service was fine, considering it was relatively busy when we arrived. It is a shame, as we have enjoyed The Bookcafe for a number of years, but this was really disappointing and absolutely not worth what we paid. The Bookcafé Belper has only been open a few months so hopefully they are still working out the kinks, but the service was disappointing.After placing our order at the bar we were approached by another member of staff who said we hadn't been charged for a slice of bacon (£1.50); I had to return to the bar to do another card payment.The atmosphere is pleasant and the theme is well presented throughout. The food was nice but quite expensive for what you get. I didn't enjoy the coffee.Hoping to return in a few months time and see some improvement
