This small iconic Yorkshire Restaurant has been established since 1962. Now owned by husband and wife team Simon & Rena Gueller. The menu showcases modern fine dining with classical roots, that is complimented with its extensive wine cellar carefully selected by the head Sommelier Didier.
Simon and his kitchen brigade display commitment to the best produce, with an emphasis on locally sourced fresh ingredients from farmers and other local suppliers. I never actually had the chance to eat at The Box Tree — and that fact alone says more about the restaurant than any plate of food ever could. I made a reservation after hearing The Box Tree mentioned with real affection in a Marco_Pierre_White_podcast. That reference was decades old, and it is now painfully clear just how far the restaurant has fallen since then — a decline demonstrated not just by the loss of its Michelin star, but by the complete collapse of basic professionalism. This was intended to be a post‑hiking trip meal — a simple, celebratory booking after a long two days outdoors. When the timings of the hike changed, I cancelled the reservation well outside the restaurant’s own 14‑day non‑refundable window, with clear timestamped evidence. Despite this, the restaurant ignored every message I sent. OpenTable attempted multiple escalations and confirmed that The Box Tree ignored all of them as well. I understand the restaurant is currently undergoing renovation. If I were prioritising construction, the first thing I would address is not the building — it is the staff. A restaurant that cannot manage basic communication, accountability, or respect for its own written terms is not suffering from structural issues; it is suffering from operational ones. The only way I was able to obtain the refund owed under their own policy was by going through the hassle of a bank chargeback — providing all correspondence, timestamps, and evidence that the restaurant had simply chosen not to respond. No customer should have to escalate to their bank to recover a deposit that is clearly refundable under the restaurant’s stated terms. This level of disorganisation is not accidental; it is cultural. A restaurant that takes such little care, pride, or responsibility in the underlying operation of its business inevitably reflects that same lack of discipline in the kitchen. You can tell a great deal about a restaurant’s food by how it handles the fundamentals: communication, integrity, and basic customer respect. On all three, The Box Tree failed completely. The Box Tree once held a reputation shaped by serious culinary figures. Today, it behaves like a restaurant trading on a legacy it no longer upholds. The silence, the avoidance, the refusal to honour its own terms — these are not the actions of a restaurant operating at any meaningful standard. If a restaurant cannot manage the simplest administrative responsibilities, it is difficult to imagine it delivering excellence on the plate. Throughly enjoyed our lunch at the Box Tree restaurant yesterday. The food was first class , staff attentive but unobtrusive. The staff were very knowledgable about the dishes that were on the menu. Have never been disappointed with a meal here just wish it was a little nearer to where we live. Overall excellent value.
