In the world of phenomenal brunching/lunching, Cafe Root’s kim-cheese toastie unlocks the iconic heights of legend status. The combination of kimchi and cheese is genius, but the quality of the ingredients is what really sets it apart. Those sweet slices of pickled onion on the side are a welcome addition, too. I had a craving for some of their chilli jam, so I also asked for some of that on the side, and whilst it was similarly glorious, it wasn’t really necessary. I hadn’t anticipated the satisfying level of umami that their homemade kimchi would offer, or that this would be the place to present such an elite kimchi experience. A toastie has no business being this spiritual, but here we are. We went to one of Root Cafe’s ‘Get What You’re Given’ evenings 19 Dec 2025. There was a lovely warming pre-Christmas atmosphere and as we’ve been here before a bit of excitement on our part as we knew the food was going to be amazing. It didn’t disappoint-6 small plates of the most delicious food arrived in a timely manner over a couple of hours. The baked Camembert opener with harissa was sublime-followed by a black pudding scotch egg, squash/citrus salad, seafood pate & gambas, spicy chicken curry with crispy rice & an amazing bread & pudding with custard to finish. There was a decent cocktail/drinks menu and the service was just right. Sorry no pics too busy eating & enjoying the evening. At £50 per head more than reasonable, we will go back.
