Very disappointing experience and we won’t be returning. If we could give zero stars, we would. The chips were cold, the fish was tiny and badly overcooked, and it was very obvious it had been fried in old, dirty oil. The mushy peas were watery and tasteless. We could tell from the look and smell that the oil was not fresh, but after a long day at work and being very hungry, we tried to eat some of it anyway. Most of the food ended up in the bin. Unfortunately, despite barely eating it, we still had an upset stomach during the night and this morning. Having since looked at other reviews mentioning old oil and poor hygiene, this seems to be an ongoing issue rather than a one-off. Food quality and basic standards are not acceptable. For context, we ordered 2 fish, 1 chips, 1 mushy peas and 2 cans of Coke, and were charged £28.10, which is shocking given the quality. A refund and an apology would be the very least we would expect, but we won’t be holding our breath. We would strongly advise others to avoid Castella’s Fish & Chips.
