Michelin guide? Not quite We went to Collinsons for our daughter’s graduation as a family of four plus the grandparents. The restaurant appeared well reviewed and we trusted it had been long established in Broughty Ferry. At the point of reservation we were asked for a deposit of £20 per head, which at a set price menu ended up being about 50% of the lunch price with no indication under what circumstances, or at what notice, that would be returnable – not found on the website and person on the phone could not answer the question. The suggestion from them was that it was likely a non-returnable deposit in any circumstance. This was never clarified but the deposit was paid. We booked for 1:00pm although we arrived a little earlier at around 12:50. No problems, as the restaurant was virtually empty but soon filled up with most people, it would appear, had, like us, been to the graduation ceremony in Dundee. We had parked in a small public car park just round the corner from the restaurant, which allowed parking for up to 2 hours (no return within one hour). We thought this would be adequate. It turned out not to be so and after two hours we had to move the car. Fortunately, there was a free parking space just across from the restaurant but it allowed parking for only 45 minutes. We thought that would be sufficient but clearly not. We were there for 2 hours and 45 minutes and yet still had no time for coffee (or risk receiving a parking fine). Food was well prepared and presented but not, we would say, anything brilliant or exceptional as one might expect from the Michelin guide reference for the restaurant. The biggest disappointment with this restaurant was the overall service. We were seated quickly and we received bottles of water promptly. Butter was put on the table but we did not receive any bread for at least another 20 minutes or so, and only after we asked! This was served individually by a man armed with tongs administering piece by piece, two-inch square blocks of focaccia bread per person. As any good Italian, and anyone with knowledge of good cuisine, will tell you, focaccia is not served with butter, it is already well prepared with olive oil (or should be). The much awaited focaccia turned out doughy (had it been defrosted?). Later, when the starters were served, we asked for more bread, particularly as the grandmother at our table had been served soup with no bread. We were told that there was no bread available, as they only allowed one piece of bread per person for every booking. There was no option to buy a side portion of bread, nor any other food for that matter, and we were left hungry for another hour before the main course was served. When this arrived, it appeared well-cooked and it tasted good, although the appearance of the sea trout was that very close to a piece of salmon of the kind you buy in supermarkets that we had to ask The dish was quite small, and we could have done with a side portion of vegetables, which of course was not available. Eventually when we reached the pudding, some at our table ordered a pavlova where again the meringue looked ‘just like’ the meringue you purchase in Tesco (though we cannot say for certain that it was, at that point we could only but wonder). The pudding was just as basic as that, with some red fruit on top but without cream (!!) or ice-cream or any other addition to enrich a rather solitary piece. Throughout the meal which lasted for 2 hours and 45’, we drank a bottle of Piedmont Blange (£35), and the butter remained staunchly on the table, angrily staring at us. We left hungry, dissatisfied and without coffee. We were the first ones in the restaurant and the last ones to leave because the service was ridiculously slow. We expected good food, we got an average set meal. Not an experience to repeat. Food: 2 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 3

Visited Collinsons Restaurant for the first time on Saturday evening, 7th February. It was busy, but the experience fell short of expectations. The staff were pleasant, but the service felt pedestrian. For the price, the value for 2 courses, quality, and overall experience left us underwhelmed I am not sure I would return. I left with many questions: * Why was the room so bright, with harsh LED ceiling lights killing the atmosphere? * Why were we offered only one small piece of bread and butter, with “no more available”? * Why were we denied a water jug like other tables, instead having to ask for our glasses topped up which they did with small vases? * Why had they run out of the advertised potatoes and offered dauphinoise instead? * Why did staff blow out the candles on neighbouring tables—towards us, inadvertently I’m sure—just as our mains arrived, filling our air with wick smoke? * Why was the hake overcooked and dry? * Why was there a gaudy “maximum one person at a time” sign on the ladies’ loo door? * Why were old Michelin stickers from 2018 still on the front door? * Why were we served by so many different people?
