I walked into Diggle Chippy expecting the comforting sizzle of frying fish and the warm buzz of a friendly takeaway. Instead what I got was a front row seat to one of the most toxic atmospheres I have ever witnessed in any business. From the very moment I entered the only sound filling the air was not cheerful chatter or polite service but relentless gossip. Staff members huddled together behind the counter like conspirators, voices dripping with negativity as they tore into colleagues and customers alike. It was astonishing to watch. Customers would walk in, place their order, smile politely, collect their food and leave. And as soon as the door closed behind them the staff would turn like vultures, badmouthing the very people who had just handed over their hard earned money. Nothing escaped their sneering comments — not the way someone walked, not the way they spoke, not even the food choices they made. It was a running commentary of cruelty disguised as casual conversation. Price per person: £20–30
