I called The Four Marys just after 12 yesterday to check what time our kids (11 and 12) would be allowed in. I was spoken to abruptly and told children must be eating, which was fine, but when I asked what time they’d be allowed in until, I was only told that once the kitchen closed “no children would be allowed in whatsoever.” The tone felt unnecessary, and I wasn’t given the actual kitchen closing time, so I had to Google it myself. When we arrived at 7pm, we were told the back area was fully booked with no offer of when a table might be available. I also wasn’t advised on the phone that we should book ahead. We asked about eating at the front but were told no—even though on our visit on a very busy evening on the 17th of October, people were allowed to eat there. We then sat at a small table tucked into a corner near the bar. The women who had been sitting there before us (and were just leaving) told us they had eaten their dinner there and had been there since 12 that day, which was confusing given we had just been told no food was served at the front. When we went to order drinks, we were then told that children were not allowed in that area, leaving us no option but to leave. Scottish licensing laws do not automatically prohibit children from being seated at a table near a bar—only from sitting directly at the bar—so this rule seemed unnecessarily strict, especially as we were already seated away from the bar itself. If you have more strict rules in place for where children can sit this should have been explained on the phone previously when I was asking about bringing children. All of this could have been avoided had the information been clearly explained when I called.The way it was communicated felt hostile and unhelpful. Looking at other reviews, it seems this negative attitude from staff isn’t uncommon. It’s such a shame as we have enjoyed this pub perviously and couldn’t have faulted it other than the way we were treated. Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1

Hi Donna, Apologies that you felt like that - after speaking to the staff it sounds like there has been a miscommunication on the phone and I can only apologise for that.You are never guaranteed to get a table without prebooking, especially for a group of 6 - after 5pm we don't serve food in front bar area(unless prebooked with a dog or mobility issues) due to how busy the dining area is and how busy the bar can be as it does eliminate tables for guests who just wish to join us for a drink.
