I’ve visited The Freshfield (or "The Freshy," as locals call it) a few times now, and it remains a solid, dependable option in the area, though it definitely has areas that could improve. It sits perfectly in the middle tier of local pubs—ideal for a casual drink or a stress-free family tea, but probably not somewhere you’d go for a high-end culinary experience. Let’s start with the highlights: the drinks selection is genuinely impressive. If you appreciate a proper pint, their dedication to cask ales and rotating guest beers is top-tier. It's easy to see why it has earned CAMRA accolades over the years. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, balancing a traditional, cosy pub vibe with a spacious, refurbished dining layout. The outdoor beer garden area is also a massive plus when the British weather behaves, making it a great spot to wind down after a walk on the nearby Formby beach. The food, however, is where the experience averages out to a mid-range score. It is classic, standard Greene King pub fare. While the menu is extensive and has plenty of options for everyone—including a decent Sunday roast and comforting pies—the execution can be a bit inconsistent. On my last visit, the fish and chips were wonderfully crispy, but a couple of the burgers at our table came out a bit dry and underwhelming. Service is generally friendly, though it can get visibly stretched and slow during peak weekend hours or when there's a big football match on the screens. Overall, it’s a lovely, community-centered local with great beer value, but the kitchen just needs a bit more consistency to make it truly outstanding. Price per person: £10–20
