Had lunch today, and was our first visit. Firstly, the landlord was very friendly and accommodating. The server was also attentive to our needs. Atmosphere: the decor is amazing, very stylish. I used the ladies room and was amazed to find an array of liquid soaps to choose from, perfume if you want some, and even sunscreen for if you’re sat outside!! Food: wow! I had mushrooms in a garlic Stilton sauce to start with, followed by ribeye steak done to my liking, with fat chips cooked in beef dripping, mushrooms and crispy beer battered onion rings. Hubby had the most amazing beef pie, chips and garden peas with a side of rich gravy. Take a look at the online menu, you’ll be spoiled for choice. So sad that I had no room for dessert, but will be returning to try his ‘bronut’ which is apparently a brownie donut!

We visited The Gate Inn for their Sunday carvery today, and to be fair—the food was excellent. Generous portions, cooked well, and served by friendly staff who clearly care about the place. We haven’t tried the main menu yet since they reopened, but based on the carvery alone, we’d happily return... if not for what happened outside. Here’s the problem: this pub is located in Sutton-cum-Lound, a deeply conservative, Reform UK-leaning village where it feels like if you don’t pull up in a Land Rover with a six-figure salary and a country club badge, you’re not welcome. It's the sort of place where a smile is tight-lipped and polite hostility is the local sport. This isn’t a dig at the pub—it’s lovely. But the locals? Actively hostile. The Gate had previously closed in part due to local pushback, and now it seems they’re targeting customers. My car was keyed within 20 minutes of parking on the road (and with only 4–5 spaces at the pub, that’s where most of us have to park). It’s petty, but clearly deliberate. If you plan to visit—and you should for the food—maybe bring your work van or a car you’re not precious about. You’ll probably enjoy the pub and, at the same time, upset the sort of people who judge you by the watch you wear. And frankly? That’s almost worth the trip. Good pub. Good food. Hostile postcode.
