Had food from here the chow mein was slimey the pancake rolls tasted funny, and the rice was extremely dark. The main issue is the stomach issues I had that night and following day. I chose this place because of the 5 star reviews. I have since checked the scores on the door, they have 3 which is not good enough when they are serving food. Hygiene was generally satisfactory, cleanliness was generally satisfactory. Food handling was just good. I'm not going to eat here again. I expect a 4 at the worst but a 3 is not the kind of place I would want to eat at. Definitely would not recommend. Food: 1 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4

First Impressions This is the first time I’ve ever given a Chinese takeaway five stars. I’ve been looking for a new local spot after stopping orders from Ho Ho in Basildon, as their quality had become too inconsistent for the price point. After running a poll on the Basildon community page, Golden City consistently appeared in the top five recommendations. Ordering Experience When I visited today, I did not initially realise they accepted card payments and all nearby ATMs were out of cash. I popped over to Pitsea to withdraw money and came back, which already says a lot about how keen I was to try them. Customer Service Customer service was a genuine 10/10. The staff were super friendly, welcoming, and accommodating, and they happily answered all my questions. Food Quality I ordered the special fried rice with duck and BBQ sauce, alongside the beef chow mein. The rice was full of flavour and generously packed with chicken, prawns, egg, and vegetables. Wow. Nothing like what I’ve had before from Wing Soon. It was also not greasy at all, which made a huge difference. The duck was moist and well cooked, and the beef chow mein was equally tasty, with generous portions of beef and great flavour throughout. I was also given a complimentary pot of chilli oil, which was absolutely delicious. Value for Money The total came to £17.80, which felt very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. Final Thoughts I was slightly hesitant about trying a new place, especially after Wok N Roll was also highly recommended but did not meet my expectations. Golden City, however, might just become my new local spot. The real test will be consistency on a second visit, but first impressions were excellent. I did make my own carrots and broccoli at home because fibre matters, but the main dishes were outstanding. Highly recommend giving them a go. This review is based on collection only, as I do not use delivery services. Price per person: £10–20 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
