The Italian Kitchen is a good restaurant. It is one of the better chain restaurants in Vancouver and my wife and I have been regular customers. My disappointment is limited to the antagonistic and intransigent attitude of one staff member who offhandedly dismissed my complaint about my Irish coffee containing zero alcohol.
The place was very busy and it was an easy mistake to make when the bar is under pressure to make hundreds of drinks an hour. This minor error could be easily corrected ..... or so I thought.
I flagged our server and politely explained the problem, he was noticeably uncomfortable and asked me to wait a moment. Perhaps he knew what was coming. A minute later the barman appeared and asked what was wrong. I explained that my wife and I had both tasted the Irish coffee and agreed it was completely alcohol free.
Without shifting his icy gaze from me he adopted an unpleasantly assertive manner and flatly stated ''that coffee has whiskey in it''. I repeated that both my wife and I had tasted it and it most certainly did not. He then asked if I wanted him to add ''another'' shot of whisky to it. I told him that would be good provided I wasn't being charged for it. He responded ''we can't do that''. The conversation abruptly ended and he walked away.
We were left to assume he thought that either we both have defective taste buds or (more likely) we were conspiring to defraud him. That individual could benefit from some training in customer service, customer retention and diplomacy. Insulting repeat customers is not a sustainable strategy.
All in all a very unnecessary and unpleasant incident.
