Went in on a Saturday at 2:54pm (they say they close at 4:30pm on Google /5pm on website). We were planning to have a coffee and a cake each, so we looked at the cakes and took a few minutes deciding which cakes we would like. We told the female assistant behind the counter which cakes we would like which she started putting in paper bags and we also said we would like two flat whites. At this point she told us that the coffee machine was already switched off, so they couldn't provide coffee. The place was empty, probably as a result of them not serving coffee several hours before they shut on a Saturday in peak season. Went across the road to 'The Café' which was serving coffee, and busy.

Having never written a negative review before, I’m disappointed to feel the need to do so, but I think it’s only fair to offer honest feedback for future customers and for the owners to be aware of some concerning issues. We stopped into The Jar during an afternoon visit to Topsham. The lady behind the counter was polite enough, though not especially welcoming. Unfortunately, that was the high point of the visit. The prices were unexpectedly high, to the point that we were genuinely taken aback when the total was given. The pasty was acceptable, though nothing memorable. The salmon and cream cheese bagel, however, was extremely poor - the bagel itself was bordering on stale, which raised real concerns about the freshness and safety of the filling. The coffee, ordered as a black Americano, tasted unmistakably like instant coffee. What troubled us most was the hygiene. The tables upstairs had food debris on nearly all of them, and when the lady came up to clear the plates, she didn’t wipe the tables at all; the surfaces were left visibly dirty. The toilet door had noticeable handprints, and a bin was left in the corner of the eating area. Despite a high Food Hygiene Rating displayed in the window, the overall cleanliness simply didn’t reflect it. I’ve since noticed similar comments from other reviewers, which reinforces why I felt compelled to share our experience. We left most of the food uneaten and walked out feeling frustrated and, frankly, a little misled. We chose a local café over a chain to support an independent business, but sadly left feeling the opposite of rewarded for doing so.I genuinely hope the owners take note of this feedback, as it is offered in good faith and with sincere concern. Topsham’s Jar Bakery is one of the finest I have come across. A consistently delicious, wide variety of sweet & savoury pastries, along with my favourite collection of baguettes that I try to grab weekly. Always worth the detour to Jar. Price per person: £1–10 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
