For more food reviews, check out my Instagram @eathiyah___ (with 3 underscores) Came here for a birthday dinner and it was such a good choice!! We started with the Stuffed Courgette with Rice and Tomato, and this was prolly my fav dish of the night. The big turtle looking thing on the plate is the courgette btw. The inside was rice cooked almost like a risotto with tomato and herbs Then we had the Steamed Mussels with Curried White Wine. You can taste a hint of curry but it’s not overpowering at all. Such a surprisingly good combo with the mussels. The sauce was SO good i would’ve licked the bowl if we weren’t in a restaurant The Potato Ravioli with Tomato and Cauliflower was an easy yes for me bcs i just love ravioli. When you bite into it, the filling bursts out, and the little bits of cauliflower added a nice extra crunch The Tagliatelle with Pork Ragu and Grilled Courgette was also good. The sauce was rich and meaty, and the pasta soaked everything up perfectly We also had the Grilled Mackerel with Courgette and Herbs, and i loved how simple this dish was. The fish was grilled perfectly, not dry at all, and the sauce was clean and light. Very simple but satisfying Lastly, the Spaghetti al Limone came out a bit undercooked at first. We told the waiter and they were super nice abt it and recooked it straight away. After that, it was good. Like the name suggest, it was lemony so expect a subtle tang. A safe choice that won’t disappoint Final rating: 4.5/5 Really good food, no fail dishes at all. Some dishes were more creative, some were super simple, but all of them were done really really well. Def wanna come back for brunch next time!!

I was already slightly apprehensive about choosing Jolene, as I’ve always associated them with being one of the biggest contributors to the extortionate small plates epidemic. However, I went in absolutely starving and in desperate need of a hearty, nourishing sandwich. My first mistake. £9.50 for a bit of ciabatta, a lonely slice of chicken and an afterthought of lettuce. I genuinely couldn't taste the filling because there was barely any filling to taste. The only redeeming quality was that the ciabatta itself was actually very good. So good, in fact, that I saved the sandwich, took it home and basically remade it myself with an actual portion of filling. Such a shame that a place can be so tight with portions yet have absolutely no hesitation charging nearly a tenner for what is essentially bread with a rumour of chicken. Would have actually killed me if we'd decided to sit in and pay even more! Jolene certainly lives up to the disappointment of its name. Staff seemed very sound though. Jolene's went cashless after COVID for some unknown reason. Will not be using them anymore and hope that no one else does either. This is Newington green and we are a community who deserve the choice. I've used Jolene's far less since lockdown and the customer service is generally very arrogant and dismissive. Its demographic appears to be hipster (that sounds so dated now) types who have very little sense of grounding. It's a Champagne Socialist's dream though and I suspect most of the patrons have small tattoos of Jeremy Corbyn, Diane Abbott and Kier Starmer hidden somewhere on their bodies. Decor is shabby without being chic, menu overpriced (not doubt to exclude anyone earning less than £100,000 per annum), and very tiny portions. Very, very hit and miss,but thriving due to Guardian-subscribing, bicycling "weekend vegans" and pretentious people in this now almost exclusively white, gentrified enclave where a large proportion are more than likely funded by the BBC Licence Fee
