I’d long wanted to attend one of Kokin’s whole-tuna breaking ceremonies, so when I heard they were opening a Tuna Bar pop-up in Soho I booked straight away. Here’s my take on how Kokin builds an entire pop-up experience around the finest fresh tuna each week. Perfect with a drink. Tuna Nanban — Cooked tuna with a firm texture, beautifully balanced by bright, sweet-sour sauce. Smoked Tuna Tartare — Wonderfully firm smoked tuna, elevated by soft onsen egg and creamy mash. Absolutely delicious. Tuna Tataki — Seared tuna sashimi served with zesty ponzu and rich mayonnaise. Tuna Sashimi — Luxurious, buttery otoro; tender, delicate chu-toro; and clean, refreshing akami. Aubergine Tempura — Light, crisp aubergine with a lovely subtle sweetness on the palate Handrolls:. Negitoro — Minced fatty tuna with shiso and spring onion. A timeless classic. Tuna, Wagyu and Egg Sauce — Buttery tuna paired with melting wagyu. Rich umami depth meets silky egg yolk — pure indulgence. Unagi and Padron — Grilled eel and tuna: sweet caramelised eel alongside luxuriously fatty tuna. A wonderful combination. Chirashi — Easily my favourite dish at Kokin. A vibrant celebration of tuna, salmon, ikura and more! Liked it so much I immediately ordered the rice bowl version afterwards Rice dishes. Bluefin Chirashi — Ordered after loving the handroll. Generous portion, great value, and comes with nori sheets so you can keep rolling your own. Perfect for sharing. Wagyu Sukiyaki Puree Bowl — Minced and chunky tuna from every cut, feels like the whole fish in one bowl. Layered with wagyu and onsen egg for incredible depth and richness. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: £50–60 Parking space: Plenty of parking Parking options: Paid street parking, Paid parking garage

My evening was ruined by this restaurant. It was not my first time visiting. Food tastes great, but the portion became shockingly small for the price. The chef/owner never speaks to me even though I am talking to him. Instead, waiting stuff goes up to him to ask what I just said and she passes me his message. What a DIVA!!

After £60 per person, we were still hungry. I asked for some water, and I was told to go and help myself for a tap from a pound-shop-jug located next to the loo. What kind of £50-100pp restaurant expects a self-service?

When we order hand-roll sushi, they refused to serve them as it has to be physically handed to us directly from the chef/owner so it's only available to the customers sitting at the counter. I am Japanese and I have never heard of such nonsense. If so, why does he serve other sushi on a plate??
I hardly leave such a negative review, but, it was so bad. Business like this should not be going. The owner is ruining this town.

Awful. Really rude chef wouldn't let us have any wasabi or soy! Said he made the food to his taste and we were not allowed to change it. Sweated over us whilst nearly shouting. The aubergine was hard, the rolls tasteless and the seaweed tough. At least they gave us a few pounds off the bill. Don't bother - there are loads of great Japanese restaurants in Soho this is not one of them.
