Junsei is a Japanese yakitori restaurant which is less than 10 minutes walk from Edgware Road tube station and just around the corner from the Magistrates Court. It was fairly quiet when we visited, which was Friday lunchtime but we were warmly received and soon given the menu to look over, which specialises in chicken skewers, of which there are several varieties. The first thing that we ordered was a short rib donabe (claypot rice) as this takes 45 minutes. After that we ordered some of the specials, such as the pork belly skewers and cod tempura as well as regular menu items - mainly skewers but also a plate of mushroom and onigiri. Everything was very tasty indeed without being in the very top echelon of Japanese restaurants that we've visited. The chicken thigh with skin skewers were probably our favourite and the tenderloin the least favourite with no great taste of wasabi that was applied as a light coating. The cod tempura tasted very fresh indeed and the onigiri was great too. As for the short rib donabe - this was very tasty and good for 3, possibly 4 people, though we were a little disappointed that the bottom layer of rice didn't come out crispy as is often the case with claypot rice, even cooked for 45 minutes, if not more. This rice cost 46, which we felt was somewhat overpriced and took the bill up to 171, meaning more than 55 per person. To put that in context, that's what we paid per head at 2 Michelin star Gymkhana last week. Tonight marked my first-ever Omakase experience, and it was truly a delightful revelation. Each course was a masterclass in flavour, but the absolute highlight was the live grilling. Watching the charcoal fire render the juices in real-time, only for the chef to present the skewers immediately to my plate, allowed me to savour the pristine tenderness of the meat at its absolute prime. The culinary journey featured an exquisite beef tartare, followed by perfectly timed cuts of chicken breast, tenderloin, thigh, grilled okra, wings, and a savoury main of shredded chicken and mushroom rice. The progression of the courses flowed effortlessly and seamlessly, creating a beautifully balanced pacing that is perfect for an intimate evening of shared flavours and soulful conversations. Great little yakitori spot with a cozy, authentic vibe. The charcoal-grilled chicken thigh (with skin) was juicy and perfectly crispy, and the scallion chicken skewers had a lovely balance of flavors. The grilled rice ball was a highlight—crispy outside, soft inside. Also enjoyed the beef tongue and scallops, both cooked just right. Definitely worth a visit if you’re craving Japanese comfort food.
