It's a late Victorian/Edwardian pub built on the site of a pisstiere - a piece of land set aside for men to relieve themselves into the river Medlock. A hanging beer garden has been constructed over said river, which has for a long time been imprisoned in a narrow culvert between works and warehouses. It's a welcomingly human scale place in an area characterised by alienating architecture of high rise blocks and multilane highways in the heart of student land and adjoining the gay village. The beer and food are both excellent and cater for most tastes and dietary requirements. A reasonable range of soft drinks is also available. Cash and most kinds of electronic payment are accepted. There is no dedicated parking as this is the city centre. The atmosphere is warm and friendly and the clientel on a Saturday afternoon were reassuringly middle aged. There is no banging music. Sitting in the beer garden looking down along the river, one is vividly aware of being in the birthplace of the industrial revolution and reminded of the foolishness of allowing the private ownership of the means of production. Price per person: £10–20

Lovely quiet pub. Nice outdoor covered area. Pretty much my go-to when in this area of Manchester. Not cheap! (Typical Scotsman!) Price per person: £1–10 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
