Stopped by Li-Ao Sushi a few days ago after a long stretch of eating at chain places on the road, and the omakase-style special they had chalked up that day was easily the best thing I've had in Calgary this year. The chef working the counter was chatty without being overbearing, walked me through where the fish was sourced, and the aburi salmon with the torched edge was perfectly balanced against the rice temperature. Parking was easy right out front, which is not something I take for granted after a week of downtown lots. Small space, minimal decor, but that's clearly intentional so the food does the talking, and it earns it.

Stopped by for a late lunch on Saturday and the salmon oshi sushi was easily the best version of that dish I've had outside Vancouver. The place was quieter than I expected for 2pm on a weekend, which made it easy to grab a window seat and actually enjoy the meal. Staff were sharp and attentive without hovering, and the server clearly knew the menu when I asked about a couple of the specialty rolls. Parking behind the building was a nice bonus too, since that stretch of the street can be a nightmare on weekends.
