We came to your pub to watch the football match. Apart from us, everyone else watching the match appeared to be local. We were calm and respectful throughout our visit and did not behave aggressively at any point. The only thing we did was bring one round of drinks from the bar to our table. Shortly afterwards, the landlord approached us, shouting aggressively and asking what we thought we were doing. He then told us that we would not be served any more alcohol. While we remained calm, other people in the pub were aggressive towards us. After we had finished our drinks, a serious fight broke out, and one of my friends was almost assaulted. Instead of trying to calm the situation, the landlord called me a prostitute, which was completely unacceptable, offensive, and deeply humiliating. His wife also appeared to single me out because I am not English, making me feel discriminated against because of my nationality. We did nothing to provoke this behaviour. We came only to enjoy the football match, yet we were shouted at, insulted, and made to feel unwelcome. No customer should ever be treated in this way. Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1

I visited The Little Oak on two consecutive days and unfortunately had one of the most unpleasant experiences I’ve ever encountered in a pub. On the first evening, we were informed by the landlord’s son-in-law that children were not permitted after 9pm. That was absolutely fine and we respected the rule without question. As a result, we decided to return the following day at around 6pm so our children could watch some of the football with us for an hour or two. Upon arrival, we sat quietly in the beer garden, caused no disturbance whatsoever, and were actually having a pleasant conversation with some of the regulars, who seemed perfectly friendly and welcoming. However, the landlady, Lisa, approached us in what I can only describe as an aggressive and confrontational manner. We were told that children were not wanted there and that the regulars didn’t want kids in the pub. At that point, we were already on the phone to other members of our party advising them not to come because we would need to find somewhere else. Despite this, we were abruptly told not to do that “here” and effectively ordered to leave. The tone, attitude and level of aggression were completely unnecessary. The confrontation was so uncomfortable that it reduced my four-year-old child to tears. What makes this particularly disappointing is that there appeared to be no issue whatsoever with our behaviour. We were quiet, respectful, watching the football and mindful of not disturbing anyone else. In fact, the customers around us were perfectly pleasant. We left because I didn’t want to create a scene or spoil the afternoon for others. It’s a real shame because the pub itself is nice and many of the customers we met were welcoming. Unfortunately, the behaviour of the landlady completely overshadowed any positives and left us feeling unwelcome simply because we had children with us. Of course, this is simply our perspective and experience of the situation. We completely understand that some pubs may wish to provide an adult-only environment, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If that’s the type of establishment The Little Oak wishes to be, then that is entirely their choice. Our issue was never with the policy itself, but with the way it was communicated and enforced. There is a respectful and professional way to speak to customers, particularly when young children are present. Had the conversation been handled with courtesy and basic decency, we would have left with a very different impression. Sadly, based on our experience, this is not somewhere we will be returning to, nor somewhere we would recommend to families. One final point: if children truly aren’t welcome at any time, then be upfront about it. Don’t tell families one day that children are welcome before 9pm, only to aggressively remove them the next day at 6pm. Consistency costs nothing, and courtesy costs even less. Kid-friendliness: Literally hate them! The landlady stated “our regulars want to get away from kids”. How lovely!
