Like many people, I’ve been wanting to try Makilala since it first opened. I purposely waited until the initial hype settled down, hoping this would become my new go-to Filipino restaurant after my longtime favourite closed. After months of craving Filipino food, we finally came for a weekday family dinner (2 adults and 1 child). It was so good that the very next week, when our son came to visit from Ottawa, we brought him here too. That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give. If you’re planning to dine here, I highly recommend making a reservation. Both of our visits were walk-ins. The first time, my husband managed to get us seats at the bar during a busy dinner service. The second time, we arrived right at 5 p.m. and were lucky enough to get a table before the dinner rush. Parking is paid nearby (around $20). The exterior isn’t anything special and can even feel a little sketchy, but once you walk inside, it’s a completely different experience. The nostalgic tindahan décor immediately brought me back to the Philippines. The music fit the atmosphere perfectly, and while the restaurant is casual and lively, it was clean and comfortable for a family dinner. For food, we ordered the Pork Adobo, Lumpia, Garlic Rice, Pork BBQ Skewers, Pork Kare-Kare, Pandesal, Lechon Kawali, Halo-Halo, Red Horse, and the Buko Breeze. The Pork Adobo is, without question, the best I’ve had in Toronto. Rich, comforting, and packed with flavour without being overly salty. The Pork Kare-Kare completely stole the show. This is one Filipino dish I simply can’t recreate at home, and Makilala absolutely nailed it. The sauce was rich and velvety, and paired with the bagoong, it was everything I wanted it to be. I could honestly eat this every single day. The Pork BBQ Skewers immediately reminded me of the Philippines with that perfect balance of sweet and savoury. The Lechon Kawali was another standout. The skin had an incredible crunch while the meat stayed juicy and tender. The seasoning was spot on. It tasted just like home. Even something as simple as the Pandesal impressed us. It was served so fresh that I almost asked if they sold bags of it to take home. Everything arrived hot, fresh, and perfectly cooked. Portions were generous and ideal for sharing family-style. The only small hiccup came from the presentation. The skewers were served on a narrow wicker dish that tipped easily. With a table full of food, it got bumped slightly and the vinegar spilled onto all the skewers, so we had to have it replaced. Not a huge deal, but a regular plate probably would have prevented it. For drinks, my husband enjoyed the Red Horse, while my Buko Breeze was absolutely delicious. It instantly reminded me of island life and is something I’d happily order again. The only thing missing for us was Sago’t Gulaman, which my daughter was hoping to order. Dessert was the Halo-Halo. It was good, but I personally prefer a version with a little more “meat” and toppings. Service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The team was happy to answer questions and make recommendations. The only thing they missed was my garlic rice, which didn’t arrive until I flagged someone down. As a traditional Filipino, rice is life! Thankfully, once we mentioned it, it arrived quickly. For the four of us, our bill was around $220 including a 20% tip, and honestly, I thought it was worth every single penny. The quality, flavours, portions, and overall experience easily justified the price. Needless to say, we’ll be back many more times. I’ll definitely be ordering all of our favourites again while slowly making my way through the rest of the menu. Price per person: $50–60 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

I’ve been craving a Filipino spot downtown that isn’t just takeout, and this one exceeded expectations. The atmosphere is warm, the service is lovely, and the food tastes like something straight out of Manila. Filipino cuisine isn’t meant to be spicy — it leans into umami depth, sweetness, and savoury comfort, which can be an acquired taste if you’re new to it. They execute that flavour profile beautifully here, and it genuinely reminded me of Manila food. The pancit palabok arrived in a surprisingly large portion, and the lumpia were huge and perfectly crisp. For a Filipino restaurant in downtown Toronto, the portions are far more generous than what I’d been led to believe from a few negative reviews. A great place to sit down, relax, and enjoy Filipino comfort food done right. Price per person: $30–40 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

I think the food is great and well cooked! I highly recommend the pandesal with their butter! We got sisig, ginataang hipon, and palabok and they were good and spot on. The ginataan was salty and they gladly made another one. 3rd time here and has always been a great option for me for Pinoy flavors :) love the atmosphere, the karaoke, and the interior. Serving size is great and price suits the quality of food and service you get Price per person: $20–30 Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5
