If you’re looking for real Italian food, this is the place to go. Not the kind of dishes that just look pretty for pictures but end up tasting bland — here, every bite is full of flavour. You can genuinely tell the recipes are authentic, simple, and true to traditional Italian cooking. The atmosphere is exactly how an Italian restaurant should be — warm, welcoming, and full of character. A special mention to Rita, who served us with such kindness and care. She really made sure we had a lovely experience from start to finish. Even my son, who is a bit of a carbonara expert, said it was one of the best carbonaras he’s had outside of Italy — which says a lot! We’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend it! So glad to have finally discovered Nonna Rosa, a genuine, back to basics Italian trattoria in a landscape where Italian restaurants seem to have become overly fussy and expensive (eg Gusto, Piccolinos). We were a party of 5 and everybody had 3 courses + wine and really enjoyed it. We shared a selection of starters to sample the menu, the highlights being the meatballs in tomato sauce and the calamari which would be no exaggeration to say is the best I have had in a long, long time, and that’s including recent holidays to Sicily and Florence. We all had pasta for mains which were all excellent. The menu choice looks deceptively simple which may put some people off, but believe me the execution was perfect. This is exactly what has been missing from the Stockport restaurant scene - classic pasta, done really well. I knew we were in for a treat as they use Giangiale (pork cheek) instead of pancetta for a more authentic dish. The Nonna Rosa, Norma, seafood spaghetti were all knock out and the unexpected star was the Nonna Luisa, a garlicky, tomato, potato and spaghetti dish baked in the oven so that the top and bottom of the spaghetti went crispy. The front of house manager, who was lovely, will tell you the story of how the recipe came about. Next was dessert followed by espresso. All the desserts are home made and between us we tried them all. My daughter had discovered a new favourite in the Neapolitan Rhum Baba which just melted in the mouth. I had a really good tart with candied peel in it which reminded me of Sicilian cannoli. At £5.95 for a lovingly home made, classic dessert I thought was outstanding value. It was a Friday evening in January and very quiet in the restaurant. The atmosphere was great though as they play Neopolitan music, not too loud, which adds to the holiday atmosphere. So glad to have found this no-nonsense Italian and will definitely be back soon to try their pizzas too.
