Came here solo tonight and had the most heartwarming experience. I was eyeing the borscht on the menu but decided not to order it since I thought it might be too much. The girl brought me a bowl anyway, completely on the house, just so I could try it. I was genuinely moved. They are so incredibly sweet. Will absolutely be back next time in Edinburgh! Cash only, so make arrangements, as you don’t want to miss out. I had one of my better meals in Edinburgh at One Plate. I grew up in Singapore and was initially skeptical of the Hainanese chicken rice because it looked so yellow, but it surprisingly tasted authentic. I’m quite particular about the flavour of my rice, though my tastebuds approved of this dish. The chicken was also cooked to perfection, as the meat was silky smooth. The soy and chilli sauces were not quite the right taste, but I typically don’t use them, anyway. We also ordered the lamb stew, which was tender and comforting, especially with the addition of beancurd sheets—my favourite. Portions are huge and filling. We had planned to order the deep fried milk curds, but aborted that idea, as we were too stuffed. The milk tea was rich and strong. I couldn’t sleep that evening, but I rarely consume caffeine, so am quite susceptible to its effects. Also, if you’re looking for a coffee option, they’ve got yuan yang, which is a mixture of tea and coffee. The owner will also happily make you a coffee if you ask, though. The owner was very warm and hospitable. She checked in with us a couple of times, made conversation and was very observant and quick to replace a pair of chopsticks when she noticed that my husband dropped his on the floor. The restaurant is very small and intimate, but it’s kept neat and clutter-free, so I felt quite comfortable despite the confined space. There are two tables for four, two tables for two and extra counter seating, so a capacity of 14 people. I definitely recommend this restaurant. The food, service and ambience deserve my praises.
