Here's an attempt at an actually reasonable review, because in fairness to PARISSI they clearly deserve it. As the owners' retorts to others' less fair and obviously disgruntled customer reviews suggest, we do all need to respect the long hours, the hard work and the comparatively little pay - the commitment it takes to be in the restaurant game is truly something. And what PARISSI have done so far deserves recognition. If used to your average cafe food then they will surprise you pleasantly, as the menu at PARISSI (while staying largely the same for quite some time now) is extremely well put together and you can usually find something delicious to suit your mood. As someone who lives extremely nearby and loves babaganush and baked eggs and colourful salads and basically their whole menu, it strikes my wife and I why we seem to only ever find ourselves there once in a blue moon. I talk posh (sic) and I'm from money (guilty) - I should fit right in here. Even so when the bill comes, we remember why we haven't come back in a while. I would guess that the real problem here is the cost of upkeep or rent as PARISSI is located so centrally in Brixton. Yet we find places in the market who charge less for greater quantity of food... So why not go there instead? Because the food isn't as good. I am a foodie, not a pig (most of the time) - I want what PARISSI are serving. My concern is that slowly the whole area becomes out of balance. Wealthy people don't have better taste, they can just afford more. If the only people you cater to are those that can afford fairly delicious but distinctly over-priced food (and it is over-priced, sorry, there's quality and there's quality - this is not mind-boggling level food - it's the sort of food you'd find reasonably priced everywhere else in the world except places like Dubai, or New York, you get the picture...) Who then is going to help buck the trend of 'if you want decent food you have to be rich' ? Why do others not complain about how over-priced it is? I would imagine, usually because they don't notice. These things don't happen overnight. Perhaps the PARISSI folk could start thinking bigger picture here, and it might help us all out. Why does Nour cash and carry keep having to move? Why did Burnt Toast Cafe (who used to have lines around the corner to eat their fairly priced, delicious food) not survive the pandemic? These local institutions don't survive if they can't compete and pay the rent - then new businesses move in who can stomach charging more for less or the same. Everyone pays more because there's no alternative and the cycle repeats. Let's face it. Once the Claphamite yummy-mummys and yuppy banky-boys find somewhere more en vogue to throw their money around, they will. Then who will remain to appreciate the anti-capitalistic, anti-globalisation slogans on the staff's T-shirts? The same people who will gladly pay £5 for a single sausage? Who will unthinkingly pay £30-40+/ head for brunch? Frankly, not the sort of people who I want in my social milieu, personally. So why not provide options for people who like delicious food but don't always want to pay mouth-watering prices? You never know - lines might start forming around the corner. Maybe PARISSI could become the sort of place people will remember for years to come. Delicious food and an actual atmosphere. Not just full of people who heard about the place and don't know where else to go. It's not their fault. But I wonder if it needs to be their problem before they address the situation. This would be a shame. Nobody who works hard deserves to find out the hard way. I just hope the next time we forget why we don't go to PARISSI regularly and find ourselves ordering their food that we see some signs that it might actually be turning into the genuine local spot it could be, with sincerity in their business, rather than a super 'gramable money trap, which it could soon become totally. Pretty durned OK shakshuka though - naice! Food: 3 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 2 Price per person: £30–40
