Having read the glowing reviews, we were really excited to eat at Pip, given its connection to Mary-Ellen McTague. Sadly, it was a great disappointment. We felt like we were given the room service menu or there was a better restaurant somewhere else in the building and we were seated in the hotel foyer by accident. There was a very limited menu consisting of mainly lunch style burgers and a chicken sandwich type options. Whilst there was a fish of the day and a pasta option, there were no specials and certainly not the Lancashire hotpot or treacle tart that the likes of Jay Rayner and William Sitwell have been wowed by. The “innovative and conscientious approach to cooking, crafting new flavours from unconventional ingredients” and “curious, creative spirit to every dish” mentioned in reviews and on the website were notable by their absence. Possibly the only innovative flavour was the fennel seeds on the soggy pastry of my sausage roll (which distinctly felt microwaved). Service was polite and friendly but haphazard. We shouldn’t have had to remind the servers that cutlery was needed to eat our food. It honestly felt as if the kitchen was on a limited service, either because they don’t do a full service on a Tuesday or because there was something more important going on in the hotel. If this was the case, this should have been made clear when booking to give us the opportunity to eat elsewhere. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £60–70 Food: 2 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 1
