We booked a table for 10 people (4 adults and 6 children) directly by phone after Prime was recommended by our hotel. At no point during the booking was the dress code mentioned, despite the restaurant knowing we were bringing children.
When we arrived, our 11-year-old son was refused entry because his clean, smart shorts had a sports brand logo. They were not football shorts or gym wear, just neat children's shorts. I fully accept that we overlooked the published dress code, but a simple reminder during the booking call could have avoided the entire situation.
I asked whether any discretion could be shown, or whether I could speak to the owner. The answer was no. My wife then spent an hour and £30 on a taxi returning to our hotel to collect different trousers because there were no shops open.
While she was gone, eight of us, including hungry children, waited outside before eventually being invited into the bar. Even after we complied, we were met with comments such as, "Let me just check you're all wearing the correct clothing," and, "Is he appropriately dressed now?" We found those comments unnecessary and patronising.
Despite the experience, we still spent over £1,300 because it was too late to find another restaurant for a party of 10. The food was good, but it did not make up for the way we were treated.
One member of staff deserves special recognition: our waitress, Katie. She was warm, professional and did everything she could to improve what had become a very uncomfortable evening.
We accept that we missed the dress code. What disappointed us was the complete lack of empathy, flexibility and hospitality shown by management. Rules are important, but so is common sense. Sadly, that was missing on this occasion.
