One extra star just for the manager (Gino?) who tried to fix what was a disastrous dinner and offered us a bottle of wine on the house - to take away and have in our B&B with an improvised petrol station food picnic, otherwise it would definitely have been one star. Why? 1. Tacky, seaside resort buffet room feel of the place, no atmosphere whatsoever. Quite depressing. 2. Very distracted service, waiters and management walking around without looking at the tables or chatting to one another - getting someone's attention took a good couple of minutes of me waving my hand in the air. 3. Smoked salmon starter came with chantilly cream (!!!) instead of horseradish remoulade. Dish wasn't replaced as they had ran out of horseradish - salmon was smeared with sweet cream all over so - thanks but no thanks, won't have it if "we just take away the sauce?". Funnily enough the table next to us got served the same salmon starter 20 minutes later - had they grown some horseradish in the garden in the meanwhile? 4. Nothing came from the kitchen after I was told I wasn't getting my starter - we were just left with a meagre apology to wait for the mains. A piece of advice from a former chef - if you mess up a customer's starter and can't replace it, at least give them some bread, butter, olives, whatever you have at hand. On the house of course. This is really basic, really. 5. Starter was anyway two pieces of smoked salmon, two small/thin slices of bread (not even homemade), a small handful of rocket and a blob of sauce - not much for £9. 6. Apple crumble desserts never came because, as it turned out, the order wasn't put through. We only found that out half an hour after ordering, after we had asked about it and after the manager had been sneakily sent to our table to chat us up while they figured out what had happened. Obviously at that point we just asked for the bill. 7. We left two hours after arrival having only had main courses (Seatrout, which was OK - crispy fish, nice potatoes, although a bit uninspired) and literally dizzy with hunger. Possibly the worst restaurant experience we've ever had - and we do eat out a lot...

Went to a wedding breakfast at Restaurant 56 where we had the taster menu. It was a truly wonderful experience. The food was amazing and the chef and his team spoke to the guests about how he made the various parts of each course. Nothing was too much trouble.
