A remarkable new addition to Ottawa. Ruby’s has only been open five weeks and it is seriously good. Living close to Manhattan, we’re fortunate to have access to some exceptional restaurants, and I don’t make this comparison lightly: Ruby’s is right up there. This isn’t formal, white-tablecloth dining—it’s simply incredibly thoughtful, creative and flavourful food. Every starter seemed better than the last. The scallops and mushrooms were standouts, and the 60-day aged steak with bone marrow was one of the best steaks I’ve had—NYC steakhouses included. And then there was the chicken. We never order chicken when we go out because it can be the safe, uninspired choice. Another table overheard us debating what to order and literally called over, “Get the chicken!” Thank goodness we listened. Brined for two days, it was succulent, deeply flavourful and absolutely delicious. The wine list deserves a mention too. It’s clearly been put together by people who love finding interesting wines rather than just familiar labels—Blaufränkisch from Austria, South African wines and other unexpected gems, all at refreshingly reasonable prices. Our Bordeaux was beautiful. The dollar-per-point-of-happiness here is exceptionally high. Five weeks in, Ruby’s already feels like something special. A huge thank you to Adriane, the owner, our wonderful server Brin, the chef, and the entire team who made our night so memorable. Ottawa: go now before everyone figures it out. We visited Ruby’s last week for a date night. Service was slow at first, with a 25-minute wait to place our order and no check-ins for nearly an hour. After I spoke to someone at the bar, our waitress apologised, explained there was a miscommunication and became much more attentive, which greatly improved the rest of our evening. We had the smoked ham, shrimp toast, mushroom, faro and fries. It was all so good! Would come back for sure. This place delivers on every front. From the moment you walk in the ambiance strikes the perfect balance between sophisticated and welcoming ideal for an intimate dinner or a fun night out with friends. The vibes are top notch. The food is exceptional. The shrimp toast is unreal and easily one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. The cocktail and wine list is thoughtfully curated with genuine depth that goes beyond the usual suspects. Whether you're looking for a casual brunch, a memorable date night or even scouting an event space for a wedding or corporate gathering, Ruby's can do it all. I've been back multiple times and keep finding reasons to return. If you haven't experienced Ruby's yet, it deserves to be at the top of your list. I would rate this place a 12/10 overall.
