5/5 Stars — Absolutely exceptional. Satoru 悟. Hands down the best Japanese restaurant I’ve eaten at outside of Japan. I came to Edinburgh in August for the Fringe Festival. While the city streets were packed with tourists, this hidden gem located at the back corner of St. Patrick’s Square provided the perfect retreat from the bustling crowds. The atmosphere here is wonderfully relaxed and comfortable—a seamless blend of Japanese aesthetic and classic British charm, without feeling cramped like many local spots. The staff are warm, attentive, and incredibly welcoming. As for the food:. Katsudon: Hands down the best pork cutlet rice bowl I have ever had. The pork cutlet was fried to absolute perfection—golden and crispy on the outside, remarkably tender and juicy on the inside, with a deep, rich flavor. It’s served over fragrant, perfectly cooked Japanese rice and topped with just the right balance of soft, savory egg. Taking a big bite of the succulent pork followed by a spoonful of that fluffy rice creates a burst of pure satisfaction in every mouthful. Truly my favorite dish of the meal. Oysters & Shrimp Tempura: Exceptionally well-executed, light, crispy, and well above expectations. You can truly tell the chef puts great care and artistry into their tempura and menu. Looking at the table next to us enjoying the Sukiyaki, it looked so appetizing that I’ve already decided what I’m ordering on my next visit! If you are ever visiting Edinburgh—whether for the Fringe or just passing through—this spot is a must-try. A true culinary highlight of my trip! We came back because we genuinely enjoyed the food here before, but this visit was a huge mistake. Their published Last Order is 21:00, and we arrived at 8:48 PM—still 12 minutes before the cutoff. Working in the restaurant industry myself, I know 10+ minutes is more than enough time to quickly place an order. Instead, the staff turned us away, claiming that "other orders came in first and serving us would delay the kitchen staff from leaving on time.". It's deeply frustrating to support a restaurant for its food only to be treated like this. Turning customers away before your advertised cutoff just so staff can leave early is completely unprofessional. If you stop taking orders before 8:45 PM, change your posted hours instead of wasting returning customers' time and goodwill. Food: 4 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Meal type: Dinner
