This is the first review I've ever posted, but it was so bad I felt compelled. First of all, we make a reservation for 6:30, and when we arrive we are placed at this kind of makeshift table at the front of the restaurant that's incredibly small and only good for couples (I was there with my friend). Depending on the peoples' sizes around you, there's basically almost no room to sit. I ask to move to one of the very very few tables they have in the back but was greeted with a firm no by 2 people: "unfortunately we're full so I'm going to have to sit you there for now". After a bit of haggling we're told that we can sit in the back but that the restaurant will need the table back by quarter to 8. Cool, a bit rude and I would have liked this option when I came in, but no problem. I get the full breakfast as a main and my friend gets the halloumi sandwich, and we get the fried shrimp to start. The fried shrimp is dry, unsalted, and tastes very fishy; there were about 8-10 pieces and my friend and I didn't eat about half. Then the mains come. My friend's halloumi sandwich is dripping in so much oil, with only such a thin slice of halloumi, that she couldn't finish it. The full breakfast was more acceptable, the beans were nice, but everything else was not. The bacon was small and crispy, the eggs were medium and chewy (overcooked) at the bottom when I asked for them sunny side up, and the toast was nothing special. To be honest, if you're looking for any breakfast item, a simple diner or chain restaurant would be 100x better for the price, and you'd get a big table and not be chased out to boot. As a final point of possible redemption, we then get the big pancake. I love a skillet pancake so I was looking forward to this. It came with some brown butter on top, which was nice. However it was extremely extremely dry, and there was no syrup or compote or anything to make it not stick to the roof of our mouths. Again, we wasted more than half of it as after the butter ran out there was simply nothing we could do to make it worth the calories. Bonus points for smell though, it did smell great. As the final kicker, as we were paying, another person was complaining about their experience as well, in what seemed to be a drink that was less than satisfactory. I wouldn't even be writing this review if 1) the city didn't already have such amazing food and 2) the staff was actually friendly. Like I mentioned, we're not really that picky, I've lived in many different countries so I'm okay with a different palate than my own, it's acceptable to have one item thats not totally amazing, etc etc, but this was well below average in terms of what food this city has to offer. I'm also noticing a wave of this kind of restaurant in the city, where this one fits the bill quite nicely: a nice (in what seems to be on trend right now) mid-century modern interior, a stern bartender at the front who takes his job very seriously, a bunch of uncomfortable but aesthetically pleasing seating, and then the food comes last. And to the wait staff: crack a smile!! Be friendly. You can't all be having a bad day. Overall this is one of the few spots in the city where I'd absolutely not recommend this to anyone (except for if you're ordering drinks in which I see others have rated them quite tasty; I can't attest to this as we didn't drink tonight). Food: 1 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 1 Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $30–40

hey justin - firstly, we really, truthfully appreciate you taking the time to write such a comprehensive review of your terrible experience. leaving a single star and saying nothing is unhelpful - a very detailed account gives us the opportunity to turn a disastrous service into a teaching situation for everyone involved. before speaking more broadly on all of this - we would really appreciate the opportunity to pay you for your time. please send us a note to info@416snackbar.com.now: we don't want any of this to sound like excuse-making, but speaking to a few points you made might help you/the viewing public see that short turn is not - we insist - one of these soulless, careless establishments that are, we completely agree, far too populous in the city these days. the seats you booked are called 'side-by-side banquette seating' on opentable. they aren't spacious, this is for sure - but our space is simply narrow. we did our best in the critical decision-making moment of space vs. flow, and this was the result for this part of the restaurant. the intention was really for intimacy and being able to watch the bar action. picking side-by-side banquette seating when booking is ideal for some but not for others - regardless, we're sorry you hated it so much. not being able to move seats from the jump certainly might start the experience off on the wrong foot, but the truth is that due to a very unusual and unfortunate blend of circumstances (vacations paired with day-of illnesses), we were both a) roughly half-staffed and b) much busier than usual. the unfortunate truth is that when all on-duty staff are able to do is hunker down for a big storm, when things go sideways it's hard to have a good time. management was simply unable to find extra hands to help at the last moment, and both owners (myself [adrian] included) were out of town and unable to jump in. reservations were in the book - all we could do is tell staff to do their best. believe it or not, we are professionals with decades of combined experience who care deeply about our product - our food and hospitality are normally very good. i don't take a ton of stock in google ratings (many places' are bought/bots), but since we're here - ours does say...something. i really hope we're able to convince you to give us another chance one day. a collective apology is due, but most importantly from ownership. please do send us a note as mentioned above so we can get you something to show we really do care.

We asked ChatGPT where to have lunch, it sent us to Short Turn, and apparently AI has excellent taste :) I think I said I wanted Queen W, cool vibe, interesting and a casual little place with good and affordable food! Well it was bang on. The hospitality specialist was very very nice and the restaurant and food exceeded my expectations. We had the special and it was Quiche Lorraine with a sweet salad of greens. It honestly was just perfect. We had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners, Adrian Ravinsky. I would definitely return and I will try their 416 snack bar another time. Short Turn is a modern, Toronto snack-bar style restaurant with strong Asian influences, mixed with North American comfort food! A must try with excellent reviews. Really cool interior. Chef's Kiss on this place! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Meal type: Lunch Price per person: $20–30
