We ordered the half chicken, chips and salad combo, while my wife went for the flat iron steak, chips and salad combo. We also had two drinks, a Coca-Cola and an aperitif. The food was fantastic. Service was quick and cheerful, and the ambience was relaxed and intimate. There were plenty of tables of two, young couples and groups of friends, all clearly enjoying themselves. It created a really lovely vibe. And then there was the steak. This is clearly not something that simply arrives on the plate after a quick trip through the kitchen. There are apparently six or seven people involved in putting it together, and the process takes around 24 hours. It is the kind of preparation that would be almost impossible to replicate in a regular home setup without specialist equipment. The flavour profile was incredibly complex, with dry ageing, a water bath and vacuum sealing all playing their part. You could really taste the thought and technique behind it. What also impressed me was how quiet and organised the kitchen seemed. Everyone appeared to know exactly their role and position, and the whole operation felt calm and well drilled. The method is clearly detailed without being unnecessarily complicated. An unexpected star of the show, however, was the cheesecake. The baked cheesecake with blueberry compote was absolutely out of this world. Overall, SOLIS was a genuinely surprising and lovely experience, and a particularly special treat for a birthday. I had the steak with fries and really enjoyed it. The steak was delicious, cooked well, and had a lovely smoky flavour that made it stand out. The fries were crispy and tasted great alongside it. My only small criticism is that the portion size was a bit on the smaller side, so if you’ve got a big appetite you might still feel a little hungry afterwards. Overall though, the quality of the food was excellent and I’d definitely come back. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Meal type: Lunch Price per person: £60–70
