Had 2 pints of budvar and price was good but best was the staff and customers. Only came in for a quick pint stayed as I started talking to the 2 gentlemen playing chess and what a treat. Nice conversation, all sorts of beers, ales and such.. Lots of Belgian beers as well some 13% alcohol. And being belgian myself I was shocked as I have lived in Reading for 3 years and never came inside here. Top tip walk towards the back of the pub for amazing labirynth of little nooks and crannies with tables and chairs. Amazing pub.

We stopped by a year ago while on a day trip from London, and thought this bar/pub quaint. This time we came to the UK just to visit Reading and had to return to the Ale house. We were just going to stop by for an afternoon beer (they really don't serve food - unless you count pickled eggs or crisps) but we ended up staying for several hours. At 15:00 the place was crowded (it is pretty small anyway) and spilling out onto the sidewalk out front. The people (most of whom were clearly regulars) were welcoming and treated us as if we had been their friends and neighbors for years; they made us feel like part of the crowd. Reading is a very nice small city, and has a lot to offer, but coming to the Alehouse is almost sufficient reason alone to visit. Price per person: £10–20 Food: 1 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5
