Last night we went to The George in Ludlow, with two friends. Our kitchen is being pulled apart, and we can't really use it to cook in comfortably, at the moment. There aren't many places serving food on a Monday night in Ludlow (apparently, you're not supposed to get hungry on a Monday in the UK!), but The George was open, so off we went, the first time for Giles and me. What a complete and unmitigated DISASTER! Before we went, our friend phoned to find out whether or not we had to book and we were told we didn't and to just turn up, so off we went. When we got there we were told they weren't taking 'walk-ins'! The place was two thirds empty. When I explained to the person that told us they weren't taking 'walk-ins' that we'd already phoned before hand and were told to just come in, he said, "oh, well you were talking to head office"!!! I replied that no, we phoned the number that's listed on the website for The George, in Ludlow, to which, once again, he replied that we'd been talking to 'head office'. Well, after I'd given him the hundred yard stare, naturally, he agreed to seat us. So far, so not so good. All we were looking for was a pizza and a glass of wine. Not complicated, you would think. So, as there were four of us, we decided to order a bottle of the house red. Our friend ordered the wine by name, but the perfectly nice young waitress we had, asked us what it was, so our friend told her the number on the wine list, which indicated to us that this establishment gives their staff zero training on their wines. And guess what? The wine we'd ordered was out of stock. So we ordered the next one down on the wine list. Guess what? Out of stock. Okay, now this was getting silly. We ordered another one from the list - each bottle getting progressively expensive. Guess what? OUT OF STOCK!!! By this time we were ready to leave, but where else to go on a Monday night, in Ludlow? So we settled for a bottle of expensive wine. Sigh! And it was very good. Now we came to ordering our pizzas. After we'd ordered them and the waitress had gone off the kitchen to put our orders in, she came back to tell us that they were out of some of the main ingredients of the particular pizzas we had ordered. I'm sorry, but by this time I just couldn't help myself and asked her if she was joking. Needless to say, she wasn't, so we changed our pizza orders. We were all so pissed off by this time that we thought, to hell with it, and ordered another bottle of the expensive wine!! When we'd finished we asked for the bill and the young girl, who'd surely worn out a lot of shoe leather by this time, brought it and I asked her to add a certain amount of money for a tip, then split the bill in two. The poor thing was completely flummoxed and had no idea what I was asking her to do. The next thing we know, the manager has approached our table and is accusing us of calling the young waitress 'stupid'. That was, I'm afraid, the end of it for me. All four of us told him, in no uncertain terms, that none of us would have dreamt of calling the girl stupid, under any circumstances and that if his staff had received even the most elementary training, a lot of what had happened during our visit could have been avoided. As for the organisation of this place, and the attitude of the management towards its customers, I fear for its future. Absolutely NOTHING was done to foster any good will with us for such a disastrous evening. Good luck to it, but AVOID at all costs, even on a Monday night. Beans on toast is a better bet!

Excellent Sunday meal.very accommodating. Good food good service.
Certainly recommend it.
