Couldn't possibly say enough good things about The Lane – charming tucked-away location, wonderfully kind and lovely people, gorgeous room (and courtyard!), and the Vegan Menu is to die for, top to bottom. (And, for cruelty-free people, absolutely the best dining – breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner – anywhere in Deal.) Stumbled on it initially, delightedly kept coming back. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £20–30 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Vegetarian offerings: Vegetarian menu or section Vegetarian options: *Vegan* menu. (As we know, morally, vegetarianism is pure bunk; and, of course, vegetarians can happily eat from the vegan menu. I expect vegetarian items were also marked on the main menu; we just didn't look ai it.)

I’ve had mixed experiences at The Lane. The staff and atmosphere are consistently great, and the cocktails are always well made — the 2‑for‑1 deal on Fridays and Saturdays is brilliant. The food, however, has been inconsistent. I’ve had some lovely dishes here, including an excellent hot and fresh Mediterranean bowl, but I’ve also had a few disappointing visits. On one occasion, I ordered whipped feta on sourdough and was served granary bread with whipped cream by mistake. More recently, I was served pancakes that were cold and tough rather than fresh and fluffy. I did give feedback during my latest visit, and a drink was taken off the bill as a gesture of goodwill. While I appreciated that, it didn’t fully address the issue with the food — removing the meal itself would have felt like a fairer resolution. I really like the venue and the team, and I hope the kitchen becomes more consistent, as it has the potential to be great. Meal type: Brunch Price per person: £20–30 Food: 3 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5
