1 star. The worst experience I’ve had at any venue, period. I have been a loyal customer here for a while whenever I am in Kent. Tonight, that ends. We sat at the bar for less than five minutes before a staff member told us “we are a bar, not a social club” — a comment that, on its own, might read as clumsy customer service. It wasn’t. My friends and I were the only Black people in the venue at the time, and we were the only ones singled out and spoken to that way. We noticed it. Everyone we were with noticed it. It was humiliating, and it was public. We ended up leaving and regrouping outside, still shaken by how uncomfortable we’d been made to feel in a space that’s supposed to be about community and belonging. That discomfort doesn’t just go away. It stays with you. As a queer person who has spent years advocating for LGBTQIA+ spaces — showing up, spending money, bringing friends, promoting venues like this whenever I can — I am appalled. This wasn’t just bad service. It felt like being made to feel unwelcome because of who we are, in a place that claims to exist for people like us. I will not stay quiet about this. I intend to make sure people know exactly how we were treated here, so others can make informed decisions before they walk through that door. Management needs to take a hard look at who’s working the bar and how they’re treating patrons, because this isn’t the kind of experience anyone should have to have — least of all in a space built on inclusion. Disgusting. Humiliating. Never again. Update per the response from the venue: Thank you for responding. I'm open to speaking, and I'm happy to jump on a call with a senior member of staff to establish the details should that be useful. Before that, I'd like a few things confirmed: a named individual I'll be dealing with rather than a general management address, a timeline for the investigation, and confirmation that you'll share the outcome with me directly. In the meantime, some details that should make the investigation straightforward. I am happy to identify the member of staff involved. This did not happen quietly or in a corner - it was said openly, in front of the room, and there were several witnesses. I've been to your venue a number of times and I have never seen this person on shift before. For context, I don't live in Kent. When I come, I make a proper evening of it, because we genuinely enjoy ourselves there. That's why this has landed the way it has. There were three of us. We had been inside roughly 5-10 minutes - my boyfriend and my friend were waiting while I was in the bathroom and we were the only people of colour in the entire venue bar the wonderful security guard. We were also the only people approached. Nothing had happened that could have singled us out other than who we are. The comment itself rested on an assumption that we were all straight, particularly me and my friend because we present femme. I don't like having my sexuality questioned anywhere, and I take it particularly badly in a gay bar, where women who don't look a certain way should not have to prove they belong. Nor do I take lightly to being picked out as one of the only Black people in a room, five minutes after walking through the door. I'd also note that before we left, my boyfriend spoke to several of your other staff members that he is familiar with, who were visibly appalled and confused by what had happened. Their reaction tells me this is not reflective of your wider team - which is exactly why it needs addressing at the individual level, rather than absorbed into a general reminder about standards. I'd like to know what the investigation concludes and what action is taken as a result. Janay. Service: 1

Dear Janay Marie,Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are deeply sorry and appalled to hear about your experience. What you described is completely unacceptable. Our space exists to be a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for everyone, and no one should ever be made to feel singled out, humiliated, or unwelcome-especially by our own team. Hearing that you and your friends were spoken to this way breaks our hearts and violates everything we stand for. We take allegations of discrimination and inappropriate behaviour very seriously. We are initiating an immediate internal investigation into what happened during your visit. This includes speaking directly with the staff members on duty and reviewing our team standards. We would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly if you are open to it. Regardless of whether you choose to connect, please know that we are taking swift action to address staff conduct and reinforce our ethic across the team to ensure this never happens again. Thank you for holding us to account. We are truly sorry for the pain and discomfort this caused you and your friends. Sincerely, The Ship Inn Management Team
