Passing by, so stopped for lunch with the wife. Staff were friendly & helpful. Good selection of beers & not all the usual suspects. Food was lovely & great value. The beer garden was perfect for a relaxed lunch in the sun. We will definitely be back again. Highly recommend visiting. Price per person: £20–30 Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4

We had the pleasure of photographing some dishes at The Wheel Inn recently and they were absolutely stunning! The care and attention that goes into sourcing local ingredients and presenting plates of delicious food is wonderful. And it's a lovely venue, in a fascinating village, not far from Calke Abbey. I definitely recommend it. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Unfortunately, our visit was a little disappointing. We were told by a member of staff that the duck, along with a few other dishes, wasn't available because of the cost. I completely understand that these things happen, but it's probably not something I'd mention to customers just as they're’re about to order! The staff also seemed to be complaining about the meatballs, which didn't inspire much confidence either. It left me with the impression that the menu might be trying to do a little too much. While it's great to have plenty of choice, I'd much rather see a smaller menu that's consistently executed well. One of our starters was the scallops. At £15.50, we were told there would be three whole scallops, but what arrived appeared to be one scallop sliced into three pieces alongside huge chunks of black pudding. As you'll see from the photo, the scallop pieces were difficult to spot. It felt more like black pudding with peas and a side of scallop than a scallop starter. For £15.50, it just didn't feel like good value. The mains were okay, but nothing particularly memorable, and overall they didn't reflect the prices being charged. I genuinely want local independent restaurants to succeed, which is why I've chosen to leave honest, constructive feedback. I hope the menu becomes a little more focused, because I think the restaurant has the potential to be much better. Price per person: £20–30 Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4
