A Surprisingly Good Italian Street Food Spot in Calgary This was my second visit in less than a week, which probably says more than any rating ever could. Maybe my European heritage is pulling me back to places that remind me of authentic Italian comfort food, but either way, I found myself craving Via Cibo again. This time, I ordered the Chicken Parmigiana Panuozzo, and it was absolutely delicious. The combination of the Italian-style tomato sauce, melted mozzarella cheese, and the perfectly baked panuozzo bread created a fantastic balance of flavors. The cheese pull alone was enough to make any Italian food lover smile. One thing that really stands out is the massive stone pizza oven. You can actually taste the difference in the crust. The bread had that beautiful texture: slightly crispy on the outside, soft and airy inside, with just enough char to remind you it came from a serious oven. The restaurant itself is modern, clean, and very convenient. Whether you’re looking for a quick lunch, affordable Italian food, takeout, pizza, pasta, panuzzo sandwiches, or a casual dinner, this place checks a lot of boxes. I also appreciate the pricing. In a time when restaurant costs seem to be climbing everywhere, Via Cibo offers great value for money. The portions are satisfying, the ingredients taste fresh, and the lunch specials are hard to ignore. My only disappointment was the Italian soda. I tried it on my first visit and personally wasn’t a fan. To me, it tasted more like sparkling water mixed with marmalade than a refreshing soft drink. Of course, tastes vary, and some people may love it. The reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 comes down to the customer service. The staff was professional and efficient, but not particularly warm or welcoming. Nothing negative happened, but there is definitely room for improvement in friendliness and customer engagement. Would I recommend Via Cibo? Absolutely. I am really disappointed in Cibo. It once had great food, however it has really went downhill. We ordered many items today spending over $200 including two different types of pasta, sandwiches, margarita and pistachio pizza, and several appetizers. Firstly, everything was so wet from oil and falling apart. Especially the pizza which tasted horrendous because it was falling apart from how wet it and because it was drenched in sauce. The pastas tasted like they were sitting there for hours and drenched in oil. The sandwiches again drenched in sauce making it so soggy. The middle of the sandwich was cold which tells us this was frozen and microwaved food. Trust me save your money and go elsewhere as there are so many good and better Italian restaurants in calgary. We are also all feeling unwell. I am not sure if it’s bad food given to us or so much oil that it’s now making us feel sick. Do not make the mistake we made and save your money for something better. I am not sure if there is new management or what changed. All I know is the workers there could care less in providing good quality food. We won’t be coming back here ever again.
