This is an amazing victorian era pub, original and authentic with a saloon , tap room and main bar all set around the central bar. Fantastic range of beers, with coal fires in winter and friendly staff. I love the place, always well rated by Camra and listed amongst the Telegraph's best pubs in England. Great accommodation with parking for those staying in Durham.

Stepping through the heavy wooden door of The Victoria on Hallgarth Street isn’t just an entrance into a pub; it is a deliberate step back into a version of Britain that has almost entirely vanished. In an era where "renovation" usually means stripping away character in favor of grey paint and industrial lighting, The Vic stands as a defiant, living museum. The first thing that hits you isn't a smell or a sound, but a feeling of profound authenticity. This is a Victorian pub in its truest form. It hasn't been "restored" to look old; it simply never stopped being what it was. The layout is divided into three main rooms, each one a time capsule of period design. There is no open-plan hollowness here. Instead, you find intimate spaces where the architecture dictates the atmosphere, encouraging hushed conversation and a sense of belonging. Here is a breakdown of the three main spaces you'll encounter: 1. The Public Bar The most vibrant of the three, the main bar is located at the acute angle of the building. It features a stunning curved bar counter that follows the shape of the room, topped with a smooth mahogany surface. Look for the "Family Department" section—a tiny, semi-private area separated by a panelled screen with etched and cut glass. This was originally an "off-licence" hatch where locals could buy beer or spirits to take home. The walls are adorned with original matchboarded dados and a magnificent black-painted wooden fireplace surround, complete with blue embossed tiles and a circular mirror. 2. The Front Sitting Room (The "Fireplace and Porcelain" Room) Often called the "middle room" or sitting room, this space feels more like a private Victorian parlour than a public house. It is famous for its collection of Victorian and Albert porcelain figurines, Toby jugs, and vintage memorabilia. It has its own small, panelled counter for service and a cast-iron fireplace that mirrors the one in the public bar. The atmosphere here is quieter, perfect for those who want to "rub elbows" with history while enjoying the soft glow of the coal fire. 3. The Rear Sitting Room (The Snug) Tucked away at the back, this room is the ultimate "cosy bolthole." It is characterized by dark red detailed wallpaper and a mottled marble fireplace. One of its most charming features is the set of original service bell-pushes fixed into the frames of the bench seats—a reminder of a time when you didn't have to approach the bar for a refill. It also contains a sliding hatch to the servery, allowing for discreet service without breaking the room's intimate, "shh-quiet" atmosphere. The experience was elevated significantly by the hospitality. Michael, the barman, is a master of his craft. He greeted me with a genuine warmth that you rarely find in busier, more commercial city-center bars. His pride in the establishment is evident, particularly in how he discusses the beer. Speaking of the ale, it was exceptionally well-kept. In a historic pub, the quality of the pint is the ultimate litmus test, and The Victoria passed with flying colors. The beer was crisp, served at the perfect temperature, and pulled with the kind of care that honors the Victorian surroundings. Looking Ahead I enjoyed my evening so much that my plans for the rest of the week have already shifted—I’ll be back tomorrow without question. There is still so much of the atmosphere I want to soak in. Beyond that, I’ve already looked into their rooms. I have booked accommodation for a couple of months’ time, when I’ll be returning to Durham to collect my daughter from the University. I can think of no better way to bookend her time in this historic city than by staying in a place that embodies its heritage so perfectly. If you want to see what a British pub is supposed to be, look no further than The Vic. Service: 5
