Like to comment? Complaint from from a recent guest. A disappointing experience in Altrincham yesterday (Monday afternoon) and I’d genuinely like to know what others think. After viewing a property in Altrincham today, I decided to pop into The Unicorn (Wetherspoons) for a cup of tea with Bentley. I have dwarfism, use a mobility scooter and have hidden disabilities. Bentley provides me with emotional support. I sat at the first table just inside the doorway with Bentley beside me. A member of staff approached and told me that dogs were not allowed. I explained that Bentley is my emotional support dog and showed him my Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard and my Anxiety Awareness Card. Initially, he said okay and walked away. A short while later, he returned and told me that his manager had said my lanyard was “not acceptable” and that I would have to leave. I didn’t argue. I simply asked whether I could sit outside with Bentley instead. I was told no — because the outside seating area was still their property. So I left. I completely understand that businesses have policies regarding dogs, and I’m not suggesting that simply wearing a Sunflower lanyard automatically gives someone the right to take a dog into any premises. But what really disappointed me was the way the situation was handled. As a disabled woman using a mobility scooter, being told that even sitting outside with Bentley wasn’t an option left me feeling incredibly unwelcome. Accessibility and inclusion aren’t only about whether someone can physically get through the door. Sometimes it’s about how people are treated once they’re through it. I’d genuinely be interested to hear what other people think, particularly anyone with a disability who relies on an assistance or support dog. And after all that… all I wanted was a cup of tea!
