The landlord of this pub is very very strange around children, as has been noted by another reviewer. If you have kids, go somewhere else or you'll be made of to feel uncomfortable if they make a sound or get in the way of one of his more valued customers. No doubt I'll get an overboard response from the owner. Service: 1 Atmosphere: 2

The issue was not your child screaming: it was you (not her) sitting on the step directly blocking the narrow entrance to the beer garden while other people tried to exit behind you. When I asked you to move you squared up and called me a "f**king idiot". It was then that I said you needed to leave, because you'd become aggressive and abusive. I then left the situation and went inside because I didn't want to get in argument.I appreciate your child was extremely upset about something and this must have been stressful for you. It was distressing for everyone present, as it had been going on for a long time. I admit me saying to you - in a level tone - that you didn't appear to be doing anything to comfort her as she screamed - was ill advised. But you can't just go saying I act "strangely around children" as that is clearly a defamatory and vindictive slur intended to imply something else to a casual reader. Be reasonable.I sincerely hope the rest of your day was better. As I said at the time, I didn't want an argument with you and I wish you well as you navigate such situations in future.

My go to pub in Rye. Epic beer and a great garden for the summer. In the winter it is just as good sitting inside next to the open fire. Atmosphere: 5

We stopped by The Ypres Castle Inn for an afternoon drink before exploring Rye and it turned out to be the perfect place to start our visit. This cosy, characterful pub dates back several hundred years and has plenty of charm, both inside and out. The beer garden was particularly enjoyable at the end of June, offering a relaxed spot to sit and unwind. The bartender was friendly, knowledgeable and took the time to recommend a local brew, which was much appreciated. What stood out most was the atmosphere. The pub seemed to cater effortlessly to everyone, from couples and families with children to larger groups and solo visitors. Despite being busy, it felt welcoming and relaxed throughout. Its location is another major plus. Just a short walk from Rye Castle and the town's famous winding streets, it makes an ideal place to stop for a drink before, during or after exploring Rye. Whether you're looking to refuel, take a break or simply soak up some local character, The Ypres Castle Inn is well worth a visit. Kid-friendliness: yes kid friendly Wheelchair accessibility: tricky for wheelchair users given the unevenness of the ground and steps
