We were on our way back from east of the city, and we stopped at The Zen for dinner. It is a medium-sized restaurant with seating for about 50, and only one table was occupied when we arrived about 5:30. There was a pretty steady flow of takeout and delivery orders while we were there. So much so that it probably interfered with our dining experience.
We placed our order a few minutes after we were there for soup to start, followed by a couple of dishes. Then we waited. Orders for takeout and delivery kept coming out of the kitchen, but not our soup. After about 25 minutes, one of our other dishes arrived, hurriedly placed on the table. I barely had time to ask about our soup, and the server left. A couple of minutes later, our other dish arrived. Then finally the soup came out. Our server apologized and told us they upgraded the soup from a small to a medium, because of the delay.
The Hot and Sour Soup (with chicken) was pretty good. Rich, flavourful broth, lots of egg drop, sliced mushrooms, tofu and chunks of chicken. We had two individual bowls each, and took the rest home.
One of our main dishes was General Tao Chicken. A little bit of heat, a little bit of tanginess, and a little bit of sweet. We liked the flavour, but the chicken was overdone and a bit dry in the middle.
Our last dish was Manchurian Beef. Tender slices of beef with fresh ginger and cilantro in a brown sauce. Overall good dish, except for the one piece I had with too much gristle.
So the food was okay, but the service was lacking for us. At least they acknowledged the problem, apologized and tried to make amends.
