I liked the concept of Pina, however it’s like a misfiring engine that needs tuning. The positives: nice helpful staff who were open to feedback. Two out of the four tacos we ordered were flavourful, the Cerdo and the Lamb had a lot of depth. The negatives: Two out of the four tacos ordered came cold, the tacos felt like they’d just been sat somewhere. The halloumi was a dense cold stick of goo. The fish batter was cold and the fish inside an unappetising colour of white with hints of grey. The corn ribs had flavour but were barely warm, at least a decent portion. The taijin fries were also barely warm, probably sat waiting to be served, served with a cheap plastic tub of mayonnaise which had been plated sometime that week. The drinks menu was a huge disappointment for a restaurant that claims to be a tequila specialist. You can get a bigger range of tequila in any big supermarket, so much for the Tequila experience. They had some decent bottles, G4, Fortuleza, but only five to choose from and had their only Mezcal in the same list as the tequila. They even served the tequila in a shot glass which said it all about the lack of knowledge or passion for agave spirits. The cocktails were poorly made. They don’t shake them for long enough or with enough ice. Whike waiting for food we actually timed the staff at an average of 7seconds for a shake, anyone in the industry knows you need 12 minimum - the result a warm cocktail. One bar staff put the smaller tin inside the larger tin, sitting it on the ice, both unprofessional and unhygienic. A friend told me that apparently the owners don’t like Mexican food and don’t drink tequila - if true that would explain a lot. It’s a shame because the staff were nice, the setting and location good. This place could be so much better, but what do you expect when on a Saturday night the owners were nowhere to be seen.
