We visited The Archangel for a Sunday roast, having booked our table online a few weeks in advance. We arrived slightly early with our dog. The Archangel is listed as dog friendly online, but we were told we couldn’t sit in the restaurant because we hadn’t added the dog to the notes on our reservation. We found this a little odd as we hadn’t realised this was something that needed to be specified when booking. The staff were friendly and helpful, but we were told to find somewhere to seat ourselves outside the restaurant area. Unfortunately, there weren’t many suitable tables available. A couple having coffee were sitting at a five-person table despite two separate two-person tables being free, while we were a party of four with a pre-booked reservation. It would have been helpful if the seating could have been organised for us rather than leaving us to find a table ourselves. We eventually sat outside, where it’s worth noting there isn’t table service. Live music was also advertised for the Sunday we visited, but unfortunately there wasn’t any during our visit. For lunch, we ordered three pork roasts and one beef roast. The food arrived quickly and was generally tasty, but we did feel the portions were quite small for the £22–£26 price point. Each roast came with two potatoes, one carrot, one parsnip, some greens and a relatively small portion of meat. The roast potatoes also weren’t crispy, which was a little disappointing. The pork was advertised as coming with crackling, which we were looking forward to, but none of our three pork roasts had any. Instead, the pork had a thick layer of soft fat on top which hadn’t crisped up at all. Overall, the food was nice and the staff were pleasant, but the experience didn’t quite match our expectations, particularly having booked several weeks beforehand. Between the seating situation, lack of advertised live music, missing crackling, non-crispy roast potatoes and relatively small portions, it probably wouldn’t be my first recommendation for a Sunday roast in the area. I’d return if someone else suggested or booked it, but I wouldn’t necessarily rush back specifically for the roast.

We’re pleased to hear you found our team friendly and helpful and that you generally enjoyed the flavours of your meal, although we’re sorry that some aspects of your visit didn’t meet expectations.We are very much a dog-friendly pub and welcome four-legged friends throughout the building, with the exception of our restaurant. For this reason, we ask guests to let us know when booking if they are bringing a dog so that we can reserve a table in one of our dog-friendly areas. We appreciate that you weren’t aware of this when making your online reservation and will take your feedback on board. That said, once you arrived, we could have done a better job of helping you find a suitable table rather than leaving you to find one yourselves.Regarding the live music, unfortunately our scheduled singer had to cancel unexpectedly on the morning of your visit due to unforeseen circumstances. With such short notice, we were sadly unable to find an alternative performer. We completely appreciate that this was disappointing if the live music had been part of the reason you chose to visit us that Sunday.We’re also disappointed to hear about your roasts. Our pork should have been served with crackling and our roast potatoes should certainly have been crisp, so we’re sorry this wasn’t the case. We’ve also taken your comments regarding portion sizes on board and will share these with our kitchen team.Thank you again for your constructive feedback. While not everything was within our control on the day, there are certainly areas where we could have handled things better. We arrived for food at 11 and happily waited until 12 to order from the lunch menu. We ordered 2x club sandwiches and 2x portions of chips just before 12. 30 minutes had passed and the food was nowhere in sight, so I went inside to ask for an update. The food then immediately arrived, so either that was perfect timing or it had been sat on the side for a little while… we asked the waitress for cutlery and sauces and she disappeared for about 10 minutes- I went to get our own cutlery. The food was very tasty but it was a shame about the service because the place wasn’t even busy, so I’m unsure what caused the hold up. Also, £8.50 for 2 iced oat lattes made me feel like I was at home in Brighton. Take that as what you will.

I’m really pleased to hear that you enjoyed the food, although I’m sorry that the service impacted your overall experience.Having looked into the timings from your visit, I can see that your food order was placed at 11:50am. As our lunch service begins at 12pm, the kitchen would not have started preparing lunch dishes until then, and your food was served at approximately 12:20pm. This means the actual preparation time was around 20 minutes rather than 30, which is a reasonable time for freshly prepared food.That said, you absolutely shouldn’t have had to chase for cutlery and sauces or eventually collect them yourself, and this is something I will address with the team. Good service is just as important as the quality of our food, regardless of how busy or quiet we are.Thank you again for your feedback, and we do hope you’ll visit us again and give us the opportunity to provide the full experience we aim for.Team Archangel
