After spending a decade living, working and eating across APAC - Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Korea, let me be honest. The UK has tested my patience when it comes to Chinese takeaways. Finding a good one or any Chinese eateries in 2026 feels like a side quest with no reward. (Much like finding a toilet in France at the Metro in the 1990s, ミッション：インポッシブル) But then Loon Hing. Not perfect, but finally something that shows signs of life. Chicken Chow Mein First win: it arrived properly hot. A basic requirement, you’d think, but clearly not universal. Yes, Kokoro and Wagamama, this is about you. The chicken was exactly right. Tender, well cooked, no complaints. The portion was generous without being excessive. The noodles, though, leaned slightly too soft. Likely over soaked or carrying a bit too much moisture from the pan. I was missing that subtle al dente bite cooked and not raw, that bit of resistance that gives the dish structure. That said, the wok control was clear. No burnt notes, no overly tossing(yes you know what I mean) resulting in flambéed dishe. This was a chef who understands what they’re doing. Strong dish overall, though the noodle texture slipped slightly at the end which was rather limp. A small がくん (gakun – slight drop) moment. And then, quietly in the background, that familiar depth of umami made its presence known. Not overwhelming, but definitely there. Chicken & Black Bean Sauce This should be a bold, confident dish. Instead, it played things a little safe. Good temperature again, which is always a reassuring sign, and a decent amount of sauce. However, it leaned more towards soy than fermented black bean. Garlic, which should be leading the dish, was surprisingly muted. It tasted familiar. Comforting, even, but slightly one dimensional. More nostalgic UK takeaway than something you would find across Asia today. Another solid execution, but again just missing that edge. A second, quieter がくん (gakun – slight drop). Final Thoughts Did I enjoy it? Yes, though it definitely called for a large drink alongside. Would I go back? Yes. There’s enough skill here to warrant another visit, and I’m genuinely curious to see how they handle the fundamentals. Verdict Not perfect, but a rare example of a UK Chinese takeaway that shows traditional competence. Strong technique and consistent execution, slightly held back by softer textures and a heavier hand with seasoning than needed. A few がくん (gakun – slight drop) moments, but overall still ahead of the pack. Uncle Roger would be Haiyaaing with me about a few points. Next test would be Egg Fried Rice and Sweet&Sour.
