Visited Montrose recently and it was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I’ve had in Edinburgh (ever). The wine wasn’t really to our taste — a fizzy, sour Cabernet Franc that we’re told is intentional and driven by their sister restaurant Timberyard and their palate. Fair enough, but not for us. The bigger issue was the food, which simply never came. Nearly two hours in and still no main courses. When we eventually flagged it, we were told they were backed up because they were prioritising downstairs first — which frankly added insult to injury. No proactive communication, no apology, just a shrug of an explanation and acceptance that this was “fair enough”. We did enjoy the few taster plates that made it to the table, and the kitchen clearly has some talent. But a handful of small plates does not justify our experience, and good food alone can’t rescue an evening defined by being ignored. We made clear we were leaving and they agreed to charge us something nominal to cover some of the candidly awful wine. We won’t be returning.
